Hymie Weiss, also known as "Hymie the Pole," was a Jewish-American mobster who rose to prominence in Chicago during the early 20th century. He was a close associate of Johnny Torrio and Al Capone, working for their criminal organization known as the Chicago Outfit.
Weiss was known for his violent temper and his willingness to go to war with rival gangs. In the early 1920s, he became the leader of the North Side Gang, a powerful criminal organization that rivaled the South Side Gang, led by Capone.
Weiss' rivalry with Capone escalated into a brutal gang war that came to be known as the Beer Wars. The conflict resulted in numerous killings on both sides, with Weiss narrowly escaping several assassination attempts.
In 1926, Weiss was gunned down in a hail of bullets while leaving a courthouse in Chicago. His death marked the end of the Beer Wars and solidified Capone's control over the city's criminal underworld. Weiss' legacy as a ruthless gangster who fought against the forces of organized crime in Chicago continues to be remembered to this day.
